About the Collaboration

Building on years of mutual appreciation, Humans since 1982 has partnered with BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) and SolidNature to create a fusion of kinetic art, architectural innovation, and material mastery.

This collaboration emerged naturally from Bjarke Ingels' long-standing collection of the studio's work, reflecting their shared belief in art's power to elevate architectural spaces. During a brainstorming session in Copenhagen, Humans since 1982 and Bjarke Ingels agreed the piece should embody time through material presence itself. They sought a medium that could express temporal layers - like annual rings in a tree. This vision led to SolidNature, whose stone craftsmanship enabled the detail required to bring this concept to life.

The work merges Humans since 1982's kinetic choreography with BIG's architectural vision and SolidNature's material expertise. Stone becomes the canvas for precisely orchestrated clock movements, creating a dialogue between the eternal and the ephemeral.

"The fact that stones - especially sedentary and even metamorphic rocks are like geological calendars, each stratum like a date in a ledger, makes it a beautiful natural illustration of the concept of time. The two coming together – technology and geology, Minutes, Hours and Millenia – seems like inevitability."

- Bjarke Ingels

"We sought a material that could express time in its own way, through the visible layers it holds, much like the annual rings in a tree."

- Humans since 1982

For 3daysofdesign, two artist's proofs introduce this collaboration, with made-to-order editions planned for later this year.
